MADRID (AFP) - Olympic road race champion Samuel Sanchez said he is hoping to transform a series of near-successes on the Tour of the Basque Country into his maiden overall victory in the Spanish stage race this week. Sanchez is one of the few non-Basque riders employed by the Euskaltel team, and comes to the six-stage race in fine fettle having won the Miguel Indurain Grand Prix in neighbouring Navarro this weekend. After finishing on the podium three times and among the top ten six times, Sanchez, 33, said he will give it everything to finally secure overall victory next Saturday, when the race finishesd with a 24km time trial. Euskaltel, however, have their work cut out against several big name contenders such as Andy and Frank Schleck (Leopard-Trek), Ivan Basso (Liquigas), defending champion Chris Horner (RadioShack) or German Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad).
