LAHORE - Advisor to Chief Minister Zakia Shahnawaz has said that the objective of holding Gypsy Mela was to promote cultural activities.

She was talking to the media at the Gypsy Mela arranged by Social Welfare Department in collaboration with NGO Godd, at the Children’s Library Complex, here on Tuesday.

Zakiya Shahnawaz said that the purpose of gypsy fair was to bridge the gulf between gypsies and other segments of the society. Different tribes of gypsies participated in the fair and exhibited their products. Folk artists from all over the country especially Cholistan and Thar also took part in the festivities.

Zakia Shahnawaz said, “Fairs and festivals are a part of the culture of the province and through these events various traditions are kept alive and the younger generation is apprised about them.”

This year’s Gypsy Mela boosted 70 stalls including 40 by different institutions of the Social Welfare Department, which displayed products made by skilled women working at these institutions.

Stalls of handicraft, crockery, jewellery, garments, henna designs and food items had been set up while folk music, dances, puppet shows and theatre was also presented at the fair.

Director General Social Welfare Malik Muhammad Aslam, Social Welfare District Officers Tanvir and Arif Saddiqui were also present on the occasion.
