Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan says it’s time for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to probe the assets of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family. Khan was talking to the media following the revelations of PanamaPapers, which alleged tax evasion on the part of around 140 global leaders including PM Sharif.

“Nawaz Sharif has transferred all his wealth and property to his children and now they have to tell lies to save his face,” Khan said. “We have been saying for 20 years that Sharif has assets abroad.”

The PTI chief said there’s a clear difference between the statements of Nawaz Sharif and his children. Khan further said the money of the poor has been transferred abroad by the ruling party head.

“Now they will say it is a conspiracy against them. It is not a conspiracy, they have been caught by Allah,” Khan said.

He added that Panama Papers have revealed the secrets of many powerful people around the world.

“If investigation has been initiated in Australia, New Zealand and Iceland, there should be an inquiry against Nawaz Sharif as well,” he demanded. “The trail of money can be traced easily. Hence, it should be investigated how the money is coming into the Sharif family.”

“NAB has stated that there is millions worth of corruption on a daily basis in Pakistan and it is because the leadership is involved in corruption. Every Pakistani is under debt of Rs 135,000 just because of corruption and their leaders making assets abroad.”

Khan urged NAB to start investigating the Sharif family immediately, calling it a defining moment for Pakistan. “If NAB does not catch them then it should not bother catching the smaller fish of corruption either,” he said. “Pakistani people need to realize the level of corruption the ruling party is indulging in at their expense. All the money is being sent abroad; money which is being extracted from mega projects.”

Khan said thus for only a single company’s record has been revealed, and there might be many more. “I’m not putting these allegations. I did not issue the Panama Leaks. It is done by an international body,” Khan said.

Khan stressed the time for accountability is here.

“Panama Leaks has even issued the names of companies, so no one can lie about it,” he said. “Couple of years back, Nawaz Sharif paid tax of only Rs 5,000, but this record of these companies shows that he is a billionaire. If the intuitions cannot hold the PM accountable, then they should be closed down.
