A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake registered Wednesday near the Aleutian Andreanof Islands of Alaska, the US Geological Service said. The USGS said in its preliminary assessment that the epicenter was 143 kilometers (89 miles) west-southwest of Adak, Alaska, on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea, or some 2,000 kilometers (1,279 miles) west of Anchorage, Alaska.
