ISLAMABAD - There is no shortage of talent in the country and the only thing in which the country lacks behind is not giving opportunities to the deserving players at the right time. These views were expressed by Hamza Butt, the main player of Punjab Men's Junior Basketball team in an exclusive interview with TheNation on Wednesday. Hamza has done his O levels from Lahore Grammar School recently and a regular player of DHA Basketball team from the past five years. He said multinationals and national institutes must come forward to promote this game in the country along with the government organisations as the country possesses great talent in this particular sport but due to sheer negligence this sport is not as popular among the youth as it should have been. He said international standards basketball courts must be built at every major city and the players from grassroots level must be given special attention and focus which can help in getting world class players from each and every corner of the country. He further said players must be provided proper basketball playing shoes and flood lights should be installed at every playing field which is the need of the hour so players can practice without any fear of fading day light, as most of the basketball matches all over the world are played under flood lights. He said regular tournaments can help a great deal in finding and grooming natural talent. He said players must be given VIP treatment like in other countries sports personalities are given special treatment. He further said overage players were the main hurdle in denying deserving players a chance at the senior level. He said Lahore is the base camp of basketball but this particular sports is being treated like step mother. He said CDA has installed basketball courts at every sector and these courts are equipped with floodlights too, but there is an urgent need of proper maintenance and giving chance to youngsters instead of overage players who not only play themselves but also bring in their friends and other relatives who didn't give chance to others to show their skills. He demanded of the government to give full attention to basketball like other sports and announce special packages for the players.
