OUR STAFF REPORTER GUJRAT - As many as 11 people, including minor children, have drowned in the river Chenab during the last two weeks during picnicking but the district government has taken no steps to save peoples lives. Gujrat district has been in the grip of heat waves since last two weeks whereas the unscheduled load shedding has added to woes and forced them to visit the river side for a sigh of relief. The statistics collected shows that more than 11 persons have taken their last breaths while bathing in the river Chenab. Most of the causalities were taken place in the village Shahbazpur, situated some 30 kilometers away from Gujrat close to Jalalpur Jattan. One 20-year old Waqas of village Bahlolpur along with his cousin Mudassar Iqbal, Police Constable Tazeem Hussain drowned whereas three minor children including Fareena, 10, Faiza, 12, and Usman, 13, died. Meanwhile, Shahzeb of Langrial, Sajid Ali of Samrial and Mohammad Suleman of Norowal met the same fate. The pity is that the district government has not make arrangements of divers to rescue people, nor has it banned swimming. The city circles have urged the Punjab government to ban swimming.
