LAHORE - The High Court has issued notices to the federal government, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) and Ministry of Water and Power in a petition challenging Nelum-Jhelum Surcharges in electricity bills. The petitioner’s counsel contended NEPRA had no powers to charge extra surcharges under section 31(5) of Nepra Act. Despite clear orders of the LHC, the authority has been charging three different surcharges since June this year, he submitted. He prayed the court to set aside the surcharges and the law under which Nepra is charging the customers. After hearing the arguments, Justice Shahid Karim issued notice to the government, Nepra and Water and Power Ministry seeking replies by Wednesday.
