ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF)’s fact finding committee will submit its report to the federation within a week.

The sources confirmed to The Nation Monday that the committee consisted of Olympians Shahid Ali Khan, Mansoor Ahmed and Ikhlaq Ahmed had detailed meetings with federation officials, players, team doctor and also wanted to meet with head coach Shahnaz Sheikh and chief selector Islahuddin Siddqui but both refused to meet the committee members.

“Although some quarters have raised eye-brows over forming of committee by the PHF and held it responsible for the green shirts’ worst showing, but the matter of the fact is that it was need of the hour to form a committee based on neutral persons, as it was not possible for the IPC-formed probe committee to submit its report against government as PM Nawaz Sharif himself is mainly responsible for the team’s poor results. He didn’t spare his time to meet the players and PHF officials on all six occasions.

If the government had released funds timely, the players would have reached Belgium earlier, train well there and produce best results,” they added.

The sources said that the committee had already met with senior journalists in Lahore and Islamabad and was planning to meet Karachi-based journalists as well.

Committee member Mansoor Ahmed told The Nation that they had positive meetings with the players, who refused to accept responsibility in the team’s failure in qualifying for the Olympics and termed lack of funds and proper training main reasons behind debacle.

“We have found a number of reasons behind the team’s dismal performance. We will submit our report within a week which will be transparent and based purely on facts. In our report, we have also given proposals how to streamline hockey affairs,” he added.

The sources said that the players were not satisfied with the training methods and astro-turf of Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium. “There was no need of sending doctor who even failed to detect Rizwan Senior’s hairline fracture. Rizwan played the entire tournament carrying injury and hardly joined camp five days prior to the team’s selection and was selected too for the Olympic qualifiers. Exclusion of Champions Trophy hero Arsalan Qadir was also main reason behind the team’s debacle.”

“The fact finding committee is also likely put the lime share of pathetic performances on the shoulders of head coach and chief selector,” the sources concluded.
