Troops take control of Nawagai

CHARSADDA - At least four persons, including three personnel of the Frontier Corps, were killed and eight others injured on Wednesday when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive laden car into a vehicle of the security forces at Subhan Khawar, near Shabqadar town of Charsadda District. A convoy of the Frontier Corp's Mohmand Rifles was going to Mohmand Agency from Charsadda. When the convoy reached Subhan Khawar, a suicide bomber appeared and hit one of the vehicles of the convoy with his explosive laden car. As a result of the incident, three personnel of the Frontier Corps and a civilian were killed and eight others injured. Police officials have confirmed the deaths and said that the body organs of the suicide bomber blew into pieces. No one has claimed responsibility so far. However, it is believed that Taliban militants from Mohmand Agency, headed by Khalid Omar, are behind the attack. Agencies add: The security forces have taken control of strategically important Nawagai Valley located some 30 kilometres northwest of Khar. "Area up till Nawagai in restive Bajaur Agency has been secured," a security official of Frontier Corps told APP. He said road from Torghundi to Nawagai is now under complete control of the paramilitary forces. The security forces have reinforced their position on the strategically important hilltops and mountains and established trenches. The local dwellers, tribal elders garlanded the troops upon entering Nawagai and accorded warm welcome to them. The tribal people raised white flags as goodwill gesture. The troops backed by gunship helicopters, artillery and tanks moved to Nawagai after taking control of another strategically Laisam town. According to security officials, the troops entered the tehsil Nawagai without facing any resistance. The official sources said that those families who had left their homes have been asked to return to their homes. Meanwhile, a powerful bomb planted at Khar-Nawagai roadside has been defused by bomb disposal squad at Bilalabad. Meanwhile, at least 30 Taliban militants were killed Wednesday during military airstrikes and three soldiers and a civilian were killed in a suicide attack in the northwest near the Afghan border on Wednesday, security officials said. The strikes were carried out by jets and helicopter gunships at militant hideouts in the district bordering Afghanistan where the military is hunting Al-Qaeda linked Taliban militants.
