LAHORE - Punjab Local Government Commission has directed Secretary Local Government Punjab to take necessary action against Mian Jalil Ahmad Sharqpuri, former District Nazim Sheikhupura and initiate special audit of district government Sheikhupura in the light of the findings of enquiry, conducted by the Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab. According to an official handout issued on Wednesday, these directions were passed on during a meeting of Provincial Local Government Commission, presided over by Sirdar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa, Punjab Minister for Local Government & Community Development. Naveed Chaudhry and Ijaz Maharvi, members Local Government Commission also attended the meeting. The anti-corruption inquiry revealed that former district nazim Sheikhupura Mian Jalil Ahmad Sharaqpuri had been involved in corruption worth millions of rupees and misuse of authority. The meeting reviewed in details the findings of inquiry report referred by the ACE. The inquiry, initiated on the complaint of UC nazims of District Sheikhupura, disclosed that Mian Jalil Ahmad Sharaqpuri had been involved in committing the corruption to the tune of crores of rupees and misuse of authority. He spent eight hundred thousands rupees on the occasion of the visit of Ch Pervaiz Elahi, former CM Punjab, at Sharaqpur and the purpose was to get him introduced. Jalil Sharqpuri drew an advance amount of Rs0.6 million to celebrate the Pakistan Day on 23rd March 2006. Thereafter another amount of Rs0.8 million was drawn and loss was caused to the government exchequer. He drew Rs0.9 million in the name of nazims and delegations of union councils who attended the celebrations of Pakistan Day at Minar-e-Pakistan on the same day i.e. 23rd March 2006. An amount of Rs7,36,000 was drawn for the celebrations of Independence Day on 14th August 2006. This amount was unnecessarily spent and the government was put to loss. According to inquiry report, audit of the office of district nazim was conducted but the audit report was never presented before the house just to conceal the misappropriation of the budgeted amount. An amount of Rs0.9 million was drawn in the name of capacity building workshop while millions of rupees were spent from government treasury on Eid-Milad-un-Nabi. Mian Jalil Sharaqpuri issued 2/3 budget books to its favourite nazims without the approval of the house. On the death anniversary of Muhammad Ilyas Gujjar, Press Reporter, millions of rupees were drawn for Mehfil-e-Naat. The district nazim is entitled to use one official vehicle but Mian Jalil Sharaqpuri had been using two government vehicles hence millions of rupees were spent upon repair and fuel from government kitty. Local Government Commission, after reviewing the inquiry report, has referred the issue to Secretary Local Government and directed to take appropriate action against Mian Jalil Sharaqpuri and initiate special audit of the District Government Sheikhupura. Sirdar Dost Muhammad Khosa, Punjab Minister for Local Govt said that the founders of Local Govt System while introducing this system claimed that it would solve the problems of the people at grass root level but contrary to that it has created a lot of problems for the masses. Huge amount in shape of funds was provided to the District Govts and TMAs during last regime but the people has been deprived of its fruits due the inefficiency and corruption of the nazims. Corruption case of Mian Jalil Shararqpuri clearly depicts the 'excellent performance' of the previous regime, observed the minister. He said that the present Local Govt System was an ideal system for corruption and nepotism and the people associated with this system had been busy in collecting money instead of providing quality service to the general public.
