Limited to 1.3 billion dead

The recent statement from the Indian Army Chief has raised concerns about India's intentions about the Pakistani nukes. The statements by General Deepak Kapoor and Defence Minister A. K. Anthony show the irresponsibility and immaturity of the Indian military and political leadership. But they should be taken seriously. Pakistan has done serious efforts to control terrorism in its boundaries but the continuos support from other countries is helping terrorists survive. India always expresses fear of the Pak nukes falling into terrorist hands but is now itself declaring the intentions to use nuclear weapons against Pakistan in 'limited nuclear warfare'. The most interesting thing about this statement is that America did not take any notice of it. Being the most favoured friend of the sole superpower of the world, India seems to have started taking advantage of the situation. Every effort for peace in the region by Pakistan has been rejected by India in the past and this is how it seems likely to be. The meaning of even 'a limited nuclear war' is to destroy Pakistan's atomic assets quite apart from the fact that eventual result of it all would be total destruction of both countries. We are in the middle of a war with our economy falling to pieces. Our Army is busy in a military operation against terrorism, effectively, in another theatre of war. Indians, it appears, deem this as the best time to strike. Whatever they may think of themselves, though, the fact is that they are not United States, nor are we Japan. To destroy us, they have to destroy themselves too. -WAJIHA BUTT, Islamabad, December 2.
