TOKYO (AFP) - Russia and Poland became the first teams to qualify for the London Olympics next year, securing two of the top three places at the World Cup men's volleyball tournament on Saturday. Russia, champions in 1999 and four-time cup winners as the former Soviet Union, overcame a tough first set before scoring a 31-29, 25-21, 25-18 win over Iran for a 9-1 win-loss record in the 12-team round robin competition. Poland booked their ticket to next year's Olympics when they took the first two sets to secure a crucial one point, but in their excitement they allowed a Brazilian comeback for a 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-12 victory.
