Lahore  - The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was marked in the provincial capital on Wednesday.  

Government and non-governmental organisations staged special sittings. Politicians issued statements showing solidarity.

Such a symbolic sit-in under of Ghazali Education Trust was arranged in front of The Punjab Assembly Building. The Lahore Transport Company also observed the day. It was stated that the LTC so far issued 24,214 free transport cards including 3608 free transport cards to the disabled persons and 20606 for the senior citizens for their comfortable travelling in the public transport. LTC Chairman Khawaja Ahmad Hassan laid emphasis on establishing various forums, application of legal frameworks in accordance with the observance of International laws and to initiate information campaigns by which person having disabilities and their families can be integrated into the societies.

The individuals and the representatives of the political parties, civil society and the journalists participated in the GET’s sit-in. Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Liqat Baloch, Health Advisor Khuwaja Salman Rafiq , Agriculture Minister Dr Farrukh Javed, Ex-Minister of Education Mian Imran Masood, Dr Sameeha Raheel Qazi, Allama Ibitsam Ellahi Zaheer, MPAs Kanwal Nouman, Dr Nousheen Hamid, Dr Seemi Bukhari, Andleeb Abbas, Amna Ulfat, Bedari’s Summaya Yousaf and others visited the sit-in camp.

Similarly, the Punjab University Child Welfare Centre (CWC) organized an event. Dean Faculty of Education Prof Dr Mumtaz Akhtar, social worker Raja Munawar, Principal of CWC Ayesha Wajiullah, Incharge Chairperson Department of Special Education Dr Humaira Bano, special students, their parents and teachers attended the ceremony.

Dr Mumtaz praised CWC for arranging the programme. She announced honorarium of Rs 15,000 for the teachers of disabled students from her own pocket.

Raja Munawar said that they were not special children but super children because they were an important part of our society. He donated Rs 20,000 for the welfare of special children. The special children also presented tableau and national songs on the occasion Dr Zakria gets the Best University Teacher Award.
