Stuhec wins season-opening downhill

MONTREAL - Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec won the season-opening ladies downhill at Lake Louise Friday with the first World Cup victory of her ski racing career. The 26-year-old Stuhec stunned the favorites by clocking a winning time of one minute, 45.48 seconds to claim the first of two downhills this weekend at the mountain resort in the Canadian Rockies. "I knew I could ski fast and I just needed to put it in a race and I did," said Stuhec, whose best previous result on the World Cup circuit was a fourth place in the 2013 super-G in Beaver Creek, Colorado. The second downhill is slated for Saturday followed by a super-G race on Sunday. Italy's Sofia Goggia was second with a time of one minute, 45.70 seconds, while Sweden's Kajsa Kling finished third with one minute, 45.79 seconds.–AFP


Yasir, Ushna lift tennis titles

LAHORE - Yasir Khan upset elder brother Aqeel Khan while Ushna Suhail outpaced Sara Mansoor to clinch the men’s and ladies singles titles of All-Pakistan Open Tennis Championship. Yasir overpowered Aqeel 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 while Ushna Suhail outclassed top seed Sara Mansoor 6-3, 6-3. Muzamil Murtaza beat Abdal Haider 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 to win U-18 title. Yasir Khan and Shahzad Khan defeated Abdal Haider and Zaid Mujahid 6-4, 6-4 for doubles title. The U14 title was won by M Shoaib, who defeated Hamza bin Rehan 4-3, 4-2 while Hamza Rehan lifted the U10 title after beating Ahmed Nail 8-1. In 50 plus seniors doubles, Rashid Malik and M Khalid beat Asad Niaz and Waqar Nisar 6-3, 6-3 while in 60 plus seniors’ doubles, Asad Niaz and Waqar Nisar beat Rao Iftikhar and Rai Zahid 6-2, 6-3.–Staff Reporter

Benazir Bhutto Tennis starts today

ISLAMABAD – Second Shaheed Benazir Bhutto National Ranking Tennis Championship 2016 will commence today at Islamabad Tennis Complex. The event carries record Rs700,000 cash prize. Senator Farhatullah Babar will be the chief guest on the inaugural ceremony. ITC CEO Fazle Subhan said that all the arrangement have been finalised to make the vent highly successful and more than 250 players have registered for the qualifying round while Aqeel Khan is the top seed of the main draw. The competitions include U-10, U-14 and U-18, boys and girls singles and doubles competitions will also be held. The concluding ceremony will be held on December 11th and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah will be the chief guest and distribute prizes among the players.–Staff Reporter


Lucky Star win friendly match

ISLAMABAD – Lucky Star Cricket Club thrashed Islamic University by 5 wickets in a 35-overs-aside friendly match here Saturday. After putting into bat, Islamic University amassed 266-4 in 35 overs. Bilal top scored with 70  while Shahid Ilyas made 65. Fayyaz captured 2 for 33. Lucky Star achieved the target in 33.4 overs losing 5 wickets. Faheem made 65, Naseer Ullah contributed 57 and Tauseef 50 while CDA Director Rana Umar Sagheer made quick-fire 44. Zubair took 2 for 36. Two matches to be held in Ruby League

LAHORE - Two important matches of the 4thServisTyres15-a-side Ruby League will be conducted today (Sunday) here at the Pakistan Rugby Academynear Lahore Airport. Pakistan Rugby Union (PRU) has been orgainsing these matches to promote this game across the country. PRU Education and Training Manager Syed Moazzam Ali Shah said that the league had been moving towards conclusion. “The division one teams will play six matches each in the league. These will be the fifth match of the league.”The first match of the day will be played between Lahore Rugby and Football Club and DHA Wild Bears at 12 pm while the second match will be conducted between Pakistan Army and Lahore Hawks.
