LAHORE - The carpet exporters of Pakistan are dismayed over the cold response from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and Pakistan Embassy in Germany due to their rude attitude towards the exporters. They said that despite non-cooperation of the authorities one of their colleagues had won the Best Traditional Nomadic Design Superior award at Domotex fair. Chairman Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association Pervaiz Hanif told reporters here on Wednesday that Pakistan is losing a golden opportunity to make inroads into global carpet market because two leading carpet exporting countries China and Turkey are opting out of this trade. He said the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and Ministry of Commerce are not performing their duties prudently. He said Domotex is the largest carpet fair in the world and Pakistani exporters are regularly attending the fair to fetch sizable orders. He said that the fair was almost ignored by TDAP that was held on December 18, 2009. He said the TDAP started the process of inviting applications for participation on November 18. He said this effectively meant that Pakistan was deprived of suitable location in the exhibition and its stalls were placed at the remotest corner with no guiding banners from TDAP to facilitate the buyer. He said this year only 20 of the 35 carpet exporters could participate in Domotex. He said that the Pakistans Commercial Councillor Germany refused to provide refreshment for the foreign buyers, as it has been a tradition for several years stating that the budget for this purpose was not available. Despite these drawbacks, he added, the 20 exhibitors from Pakistan obtained healthy orders. He predicted that the carpet exports during this fiscal would exceed to $200 million on the strength of these orders. He said that exports last fiscal were $145 million and the carpet exports in the first six months of this fiscal were less than the corresponding period of last year. Chairman PCMEA said that the Domotex organizers award handmade carpets of exceptional design, quality and originality every year. This year, he said, 124 carpets from 15 countries were selected for the award. He said two carpets were also selected from Pakistan. Selection of two carpets therefore was an honour for the country. He said the carpet of Hanifsons was declared the best in the Traditional Nomadic Design. He said as Chairman PCMEA he invited the officials of Pakistan Embassy to share the honour at the ward presentation ceremony but no one turned up. Moreover, he added that one exhibitor from Pakistan showcased his extra large carpets in the fair. He said the carpets attracted many visitors.
