LAHORE - A good number of Nazims and Naib Nazims on Wednesday from across the province marched on The Mall demanding not to end the local government system and against the appointments of administrators. The protesters were led by Danyal Aziz former chairman, National Reconstruction Bureau NRB, Ahmad Yar Hiraj district Nazim Khanewal and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Mehmoodur Rasheed. The marchers who were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans in favour of their demands and chanted slogans against the Punjab govt. The district, tehsil, union council Nazims and councilors started gathering outside the Masjid Shuhda at 12:00 noon and reached outside the Punjab Assembly. They demanded the Punjab government to announce the election schedule of local government system first and then appoint the administrators. They said elections would be held under the control of Election Commission of Pakistan rather than election authority as the authority has no constitutional status. They stressed upon the continuity of Nazims instead of appointments of administrators. The public representatives joined the rally from Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Vehari, Rahim Yar Khan, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, Khanewal and other districts of the province. Danyal Aziz while addressing the participants said presence of so many people in the march had proved that local government or basic democracy was alive so far. He said because of their protest Punjab Local Government Bill could not be presented in the assembly. Danyal said people from all walks of life demanded their democratic rights. He pointed out those who were pleading for election authority, good number of fake votes were recovered from their possession in the past. He said those terming this system wrong could not changed even a single word from it and we would continue our protest at tehsil, district and division level. When the rally reached outside the Punjab Assembly, Opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Ch Zaheerud Din received it with other members. Ch Zaheer while addressing the rally expressed solidarity with the cause of the Nazims and said it was the back day and he salutes the Nazims for defending the democracy at the grass root. He informed the rally that in order to support the cause of Nazims against appointment of the administrations, the Opposition had also staged a walk out in the Assembly.
