islamabad - Ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) has decided to bring Sheikh Ansar Aziz as the maiden lord mayor of the federal capital, who along with party candidates for three slots of deputy mayor filed their nomination papers with the returning officer yesterday.
The party candidates for the top slots of the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation were approved by Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif in a meeting with all the elected party chairmen of the corporation, local chapter of the party and party MPs elected from the federal capital.
The elections for the slot of lord mayor and three deputy mayors of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation would be held on Feb 15 while the official results would be announced by Election Commission of Pakistan on Feb 16.
The party candidates for the slots of deputy mayors included Ch Rifat, Zeeshan Ali Naqvi and Azam Khan and the names were finalised in consultation with the party leaders and the newly elected chairmen of the party, a PML-N leader from federal capital informed The Nation.
In the house of 77, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) commanded the support of over 50 members of the council hence making it a one-sided affair in the elections with all the four slots going to the ruling party.
A party leader said that the elections for the mayor and deputy mayors would just be a formality as the party is having over 50 members in the house of 77 and all the four slots would be won by PML-N backed candidates.
All the four candidates finalised by the party leadership had filed their nomination papers with the returning officer yesterday and would return victorious on February 15.
Talking to media persons after filing the nomination papers along with a good number of elected chairmen of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation, the PML-N candidate for the slot of lord mayor said that he would do his utmost to come up to the expectations of the party and the prime minister after winning the elections. He said that he would transform Islamabad as per the slogan ‘Islamabad the beautiful’ in true sense and would put in his best to address the problems facing the residents of the federal capital. ”The most encouraging aspect is the support and patronage of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as he (PM) himself wanted to see Islamabad into a truly developed city,” Sheikh Ansar added.
He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in his meeting with newly-elected chairmen on Tuesday expressed his keen interest in the development of the federal capital on modern lines for which he assured his all-out support.
He said that under the patronage of the prime minister he would focus on resolving the civic problems facing the residents of the capital, especially the rural areas falling in its jurisdiction. Provision of clean drinking water, enlarging the health facilities, renovating and drastically improving the standard of education in schools and drainage and sanitation of urban and rural areas of the capital are the targets to be achieved, he added. He further said that Prime Minister wanted newly elected chairman of Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation to put in their efforts proactively for implementing the developmental projects and come up to the expectations of the people who had reposed their trust in them.
