ISLAMABAD - Chairman Intellectual Property Organisation Pakistan (IPO) and MNA Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi has said that IPO has obtained tremendous achievements during the year 2012 and approval of the IPO Act-2012 is one of the significant landmarks in this regard.  He said that the approval IPO Act-2012 has given legal footings to the organization that would help establish a viable and attractive environment for the promotion of social and economic growth by protecting IPRs.

While talking to the media persons here on Thursday, Afridi said that protection of IP rights has been considered as an important sector and Pakistan is committed to protect these rights of the right owners in accordance with the international agreements.

He said that during the year 2012, foreign training courses were conducted under TRTA-II (Trade Related Technical Assistance) program and with the assistance of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), aiming to improve IP Rights enforcement system in the country through application of modern techniques and procedures.

He also pointed out that performance of the federal as well as provincial enforcement coordination committees also being improved and in this context, various training courses are being started.

Moreover, special training workshops were conducted including Judges Colloquium held at Singapore for District and Sessions Judges, IP Attorneys and Public Prosecutors. IP Facilitation Desks were established in Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Small and Medium Enterprises and Educational Institutions so that business community, educationists and students can get the required information and guidelines about IP Rights registration process, he added.

The Chairman said that IPO is also focusing to encourage artists, singers and producers to aware them about the importance of IP Rights, in this regard various interactive sessions have been made with them.

Hameed also informed the media persons that provision of an appropriate environment for the investors is need of the hour. The IP rights protection has to be ensured so that the confidence level of investors may be enhanced. He was of the view that there is a need to discourage all those elements involved in manufacturing counterfeit products.

These elements are badly affecting economic conditions of the country.

He told that various projects are under consideration to counter piracy and counterfeiting. He informed that awareness campaigns for general public and students, about importance of IP Rights and negative affects of piracy, are priorities of the Organization.

During the year 2013, different avenues would be explored to enhance the cooperation and coordination with the organizations in concerned areas of interest. He said that our mission is to improve the credibility of the IPO-Pakistan so that Right Holders may get maximum facilities of registration. The Chairman said that media is the most important sector of the society and we cannot achieve our objective without cooperation of media organizations.
