ISLAMABAD - The IT department of Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) purchased about 200 Microsoft licences in last three years costing Rs 2,000 million and out of these licences only 20 used and rest of the licences termed fake, sources told The Nation on Friday.

According to details the gas utility company spent Rs 500 million on the renewal of these 200 licences and management of SSGCL purchased several servers costing Rs 1000 million, the sources added. Similarly, the IT department wasted millions on the purchase of BlackBerry server though it was needed as about one hundred employees of the company were using this service, the sources said.

The purpose of these Microsoft licences was to upgrade the billing system but one Oracle was sufficient to resolve the issue of billing but the IT department wasted huge amount on the purchase of these licences and most of the licences purchased for this purpose was not used, the sources added. The entire upgradation of the IT department of the Ziauddin Hospital and Liaqat Medical Hospital was completed with the money and human resources of SSGCL, the sources added.

When contacted Irfan Zafar IT head of SSGCL he confirmed the purchase of licences and servers for the IT department of the gas utility company and said the SSGCL purchased these licences to avoid the piracy of the Microsoft and servers to facilitate the company executives.  He further added that SSGCL has not spent a single penny at Ziauddin Hospital and Liaqat Medical Hospital.
