If fighting starts between Pakistan and the US, we are beside Pakistan… If Pakistan is attacked and the

people of Pakistan need Afghanistan’s help, Afghanistan will be there with you.

–Fromer Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, in an

interview with a Pakistani new agency, in 2011.

We had the same love-hate relationship with Karzai that we currently have with Indian PM Modi. The words seems strange and out of step with the times. Hamid Karzai has been quite vocal in his criticism of Pakistan, and has left an anti-Pakistan legacy. These words were contextual, he was being interviewed by local media, but they generated a storm of criticism from the US. The scenario of a war with the US was exceedingly unlikely and the statement was a less a serious statement of policy than an Afghan overture to Pakistan. However, such is the nature of international diplomacy- politicians contradict themselves and what they really believe in is only said on safe home turf.
