QUETTA - The business and trade activities remained suspended in the provincial capital and many other parts of Balochistan due to complete shutter-down strike on Thursday against the on-going military drive in Balochistan, delay in recovery of missing persons, increase in incidents of kidnapping of traders for ransom and deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan. The strike call was jointly given by Balochistan National Party (BNP) and Anjuman-i-Tajiran. In Quetta, all the major business centres , markets at different roads including Jinnah Road, Abdul Sattar Road, Shara-i-Iqbal, Sariab Road, Brewry Road and Double Road remained closed throughout the day. Traffic was plying on City Roads, however, it was very thin as compared to other days. Attendance in schools, colleges and other offices were also thin due to strike and most of people preferred to remain in their homes. The office-bearers and activists of the Balochistan National Party visited different areas of City to monitor the strike. Large contingents of police and other law-enforcement agencies were deployed at all important and sensitive places of the City to meet any untoward incident. However, no untoward incident was reported. Business activities also came to a standstill in other parts of the province, including Nushki, Khuzdar, Mastung, Kalat, Bolan, Turbat and Panjgur, where traders and businessmen expressed their solidarity with the strike call and closed down their business activities. Talking to newsmen, BNP Central Secretary General Habib Jalib Advocate, termed the strike successful and said that people had given their verdict against govt policies. Govt should halt military drive in Balochistan and recover all missing persons besides taking positive steps to control law and order situation, he said. While condemning target killings and kidnapping for ransom, he said that it was responsibility of the govt to maintain law and order and take practical steps against criminals involved in anti-social activities. He said if govt did not arrest the killer of Ghulam Ali then BNP would further increase its protest movement.
