KARACHI  - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that the government will soon start work on green and white revolutions in the country under the Prime Minister's Initiatives Programme. The Prime Minister was addressing the Members of Sindh Assembly, National Assembly and Senators that included Ministers of the Federal and Provincial Cabinets from Sindh and diplomats of various countries at a dinner hosted in his honour by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah here at CM House on Wednesday night. He said the Government has also decided to take special initiatives to strengthen the agriculture sector of the country, which has a great potential, to check food inflation that has gripped almost the entire world. "We are lucky that Pakistan has a strong agriculture base," he remarked. Gilani also informed the gathering that in the next few days a new power policy would be introduced which would offer many incentives especially to attract foreign investment in this sector. The policy would be aimed to bridge the big gap between demand and supply of electricity in the country at the earliest. "Through best power policy, this problem would be resolved once for all," he said. Gilani recalled the last PPP Government had involved independent power producers (IPPs) to strengthen power generation as it was very difficult for public sector alone to produce electricity to match its increasing demand in the country. But, he continued, the then Government was severely run down over the IPPs involvement. Had the IPPs been encouraged by the succeeding government, today the people would not have faced this electricity crisis, he added. The Prime Minister announced that under the PM Initiatives, an Anti-Hepatitis Programme would be launched soon which has been approved and supported by United Nations. Thirty to 35 percent of the country's population is suffering from Hepatitis disease that calls for immediate reaction from the Government in coordination with the international community. "We want to become champion in the war against hepatitis in the world," he vowed. He said in pursuance of the PPP-led Government's policy to ensure maximum autonomy to the provinces, the authority for mining of Thar coal and its use has been given to Sindh Government. This was an outstanding dispute for a long period between the Federation and the province and we have now settled the issue. The execution of this mega project Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said would greatly help strengthen electricity generation besides creation of many direct and indirect jobs. The PM said the Government would abolish the concurrent list as per Constitution of 1973 given by the founder of Pakistan People's Party, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He announced that one utility store would be set up in each Union Council of the country. In areas wherever these stores cannot be set up, there would be mobile utility stores with sufficient regular supply of all essential and kitchen items for the good of the people especially those from lower middle and middle class. The poor people should be the main beneficiary of this scheme. However, he regretted, it has been observed that the people having influence grab the facility of the utility stores leaving the poor population to wait for hours in long queues to get some stock of the essential items. The PM said under the PM Initiatives Programme, one basic health unit would be set up in every Union Council of the country.  It would also be ensured that doctors and the staff along with good stock of medicine are there to serve the people. "Even, in my UC there is no BHU," he said. Gilani said the Government was striving to achieve its targets within minimum possible time in cooperation with all coalition partners. The Federal and Provincial budgets have been passed. More Ministers would be inducted in the Federal Cabinet under the second phase of its expansion so that work could be distributed for the best results from the Government, he said. Now, the Chairmen of the NA Standing Committees and the Parliamentary Secretaries would be elected/ nominated soon to accelerate work on each subject. "We do not want to make a solo flight, but to move forward by carrying other political parties on board for the best interest of the people and the country," he said. Gilani called upon the Parliamentarians elected on PPP tickets to perform to the satisfaction of the people as by giving a heavy mandate the people had handed a big responsibility to them (the Parliamentarians). "We want execution of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto's vision/ programme through you elected people," he emphasised. He lauded the services of Syed Qaim Ali Shah as President of PPPP Sindh and now as the Chief Minister, and offered full support on behalf of his government to the Sindh Government. Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto herself had shown full confidence in Syed Qaim Ali Shah and had given party ticket to him to distribute as he deemed right, he recalled.
