World Refugee Day

I want to draw the attention of Mr. Karzai on 'World Refugee Day' towards the young generation of Afghans that has been brought up in Pakistan during the last thirty years as refugees. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNCHR) and the world community observes this day. Today billions of people from countries like Afghanistan, Somalia, Kashmir, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and many others are living outside their countries as refugees. They are not only an economic burden on the other nations but are also a hurdle in peace. These poor refugees are not at fault for their predicament as they want to go back to their own homeland but their countries are not position to make a reliable arrangement for their settlement. Approximately, three million Afghans are living as refugees in Pakistan. According to government officials they are a major cause of the poor law and order situation here. We love them as fellow Muslim brethren but want to settle them in their own country. -ZAHID GISHKORI, Islamabad, via e-mail, June 20.
