Diminishing everyday

Pakistan Peoples Party was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who picked up highly educated men of impeccable integrity to serve the party. That is why his tenure never had any controversies of financial impropriety. This party has had a wide support base, ranging from men of letters, professionals, lawyers, writers, intellectuals, artistes, peasants, workers and students. It is unfortunate that the PPP of today excels in bringing forward only hardened crooks and men of questionable integrity that might have mediocre competence, if at all, but a proven history of involvement in financial scandals. Why is the PPP going so out of the way to lose its credibility and why does it have an unpopular stance on every issue, be that restoration of judiciary or the constitutional amendments? Why does a party that enjoyed such widespread support amongst all federating units, appear to be diminishing every day by appointing men who excel only in creating controversies? And why, indeed, does it want to put a discredited crony in every state-owned corporation? What was the need or justification for making such controversial appointments in PIA, Pakistan Steel Mills, KPT, State Bank of Pakistan, Evacuee Property etc? The PPP does not seem to realize that it has lost ground in Frontier, Balochistan and even in Punjab, by its recent performance. -RASHID ORAKZAI, Quetta, via e-mail, June 27.
