MULTAN - Poor patients faced severe difficulties because of doctors’ agitation as their strike continued for the 16th consecutive day on Tuesday. The hospitals were overcrowded by the patients while on the other hand the presence of doctors remained thin. Health sources claimed that the doctors had started returning to their jobs and the intensity of agitation decreased considerably. According to the sources, a total of 117 doctors currently perform duties at Multan Institute of Cardiology in three shifts while 71 medics including 10 from Pakistan Army are on duty at Nishtar Hospital. Similarly, over 20 doctors remained on duty at Children Complex Hospital. Health authorities claimed that 470 patients were provided treatment at the Outdoor Patient Department of Nishtar Hospital besides 10 operations. Similarly, as many as 565 patients were examined at the OPD of Children Complex and 11 patients were operated. The MIC authorities told media that 32 new doctors were appointed at this hospital.

Meanwhile, Nishtar Medical College Principal Dr Sami Akhtar told journalists that 18 young doctors had returned to their duties and all the patients coming to the hospital were given treatment. He added that the number of doctors at labour room was appropriate and no unhappy incident took place in the hospital because of strike.

Multan Division Commissioner Muhammad Khurram Agha and Regional Police Officer Mubarak Athar Ali also visited Nishtar Hospital and took a round of different wards and operation theatres. They talked to the patients and inquired about their problems.

Talking to the media persons, they said that the OPDs and Indoor departments were functioning properly in the hospital. They added that the newly appointed doctors had also started their work and soon the situation would become normal.

PLF PLANS RED-CARPET FOR GILANI: The People’s Lawyers Forum declared on Tuesday that a historic welcome would be accorded to the former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on his arrival at Multan on July 7.

Addressing a news conference, PLF Senior Vice President Sheikh Ghayasul Haq said that Gilani was a defender of the Constitution and democracy and his name would be written with golden words in the history. He added that Gilani averted a clash between national institutions by according utmost respect to the judiciary.

He claimed that Syed Abdul Qadir Gilani would win NA-151 by poll. He alleged that the opponents committed severe violations of electoral code of conduct and then filed fake   applications against Abdul Qadir Gilani. He declared that the PLF would set up an election cell to thwart the conspiracies.
