LAHORE – The PPP and the PML-N are nearing the consensus on the name of former judge of Supreme Court Nasir Aslam Zahid for the appointment of new chief election commissioner (CEC).

Sources privy to the developments made so far said both the parties, during the back channel negotiations, had almost agreed on the name of Nasir Aslam Zahid for the CEC, while the MQM, a partner in the PPP-led government, was also on board.

According to sources, after attaining a broad based agreement on the said name from other parties, it will be presented to the parliamentary committee on the appointment of CEC, which had representation of the members from the both sides of divide in the Parliament.

It may be recalled that the appointment of new CEC is pending since March last when Justice (r) Hamid Mirza had completed his five-year tenure.
