ISLAMABAD - With an aim to keep the typical bureaucrats out and save the sinking Pakistan International Airline, the PML-N government Wednesday reconstituted the PIA board of directors (BoD) as per Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) Act 1956 with immediate effect.

Exclusively available with The Nation, a detailed breakup of members of PIA board of directors suggest that secretary defence has been shown the door from PIA chairmanship due to ever deteriorating performance of the airline under the ministry of defence. The nominated members of newly constituted BOD of the national flag carrier include Aslam Khaliq, Naseer NS Jaffer, Mian Muhammad Mansha, Arif Habib, Sarfraz A Rehman, Imran Khan, Muhamamd Ali Gardezi, Secretary aviation, ex officio and Dr Waqar Masood Khan, and secretary finance, ex officio.

Well-placed sources told The Nation that aviation division headed by Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi, secretary aviation, had moved summary to the establishment division containing the eight names for members of BOD. The summery nominated Aslam Khaliq as board chairman. Establishment division forwarded the summery to Prime Minister Secretariat for signature and final approval of the PM. The PM is expected the sign the summery soon after his return from China following which Aslam will become PIA chairman. He will replace Secretary Defence Asif Yaseen who was chairman till the PM ordered to put PIA out of the control of ministry of defence while setting a separate division. This was done to end the defiance ministry's alleged corrupt practices in PIA and its undue influence in the national flag career and Civil Aviation Authority. Aviation circle highly appreciated the PM's decision as PIA under the control of ministry of defence had failed to show any progress and it was at the verge of collapse.

The sources said that baboos of ministry of defence are trying their level best to get control of PIA and CAA again but the present aviation management is all set to foil their conspiracies.
