10-kg bomb defused in Karachi

KARACHI - A 10-kg bomb, planted outside a marble factory in Manghopir area, was defused here on Thursday.
Terror gripped the entire locality when a suspicious vegetable oil container was found from Manghopir Road outside Mehran marble factory.  Police and rangers reached the spot after being informed and called the Bomb Disposal Squad. Law enforcers cordoned off the area till the bomb was defused. According to BDS experts, the bomb contained 10-kg explosives. They said it was a remotely operated improvised explosive device (IED).
Two detonators and six batteries were attached with the explosive device. The bomb contained nut bolts, ball bearings and nails. SHO Muhammad Ali Niazi said it was planted to target police and rangers personnel patrolling at Manghopir Road.
Meanwhile, two persons including a gangster were killed in separate incidents here on Thursday.
A Lyari gangster affiliated with Sheraz Comrade Gang identified as Salman Durrani aka Dada was killed in an alleged encounter with the police and the rangers at City Railway Colony. The law enforcers claimed to have recovered a Kalashnikov from his possession and took his body away to Civil Hospital. Methadar police station SHO Tariq Baig said the raid was conducted on a tip-off at the hideout of gangsters. As the law enforcers rushed to the spot, gangsters opened fire on them. Durrani was killed and his two accomplices managed to flee during the encounter. The deceased was the residence of Kumharwara, Lyari and allegedly involved in various criminal cases including murders, kidnapping for ransoms, extortion.
In another incident, one Muhammad Naeem, 30, was killed by unidentified armed pillion riders at Rahim Shah Colony of Orangi Town.
The incident occurred near Janatul Baqi graveyard in Mominabad police precincts. Police reached the spot and took the body away to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. Police said the victim had a criminal background and his accomplice had killed him over some personal dispute.
