Former Prime Ministers - Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Parvez Ashraf have said that the country is in state of war and the nation needs to unite, adding that all conspiracies against democracy will be foiled.

They were talking to the journalists here at the residence of Gilani after the 26th death anniversary of his father here the other night.

Raja Parvez Ashraf said that the terrorists downed Pakistani flag from Swat but the law and order was restored and terrorists eliminated through a successful operation during Gilani’s regime. He added that Operation Zarb-e-Azb was underway in North Waziristan and the nation needed to exhibit unity besides supporting Internally Displace Persons (IDPs).

Answering a question, he said that the history of PPP was filled with vindictive cases registered against its leaders and former prime ministers by the opponents. “Our Quaid Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was hanged in a fake case while Mohtarma was martyred. But we’re not afraid of fake cases and we’ll face them bravely,” he declared. He said that the PPPP always fought for the protection of democracy and it would foil all conspiracies against it.

Talking to the journalists on the occasion, former premier Gilani said that the nation needed to support the IDPs generously. Citing examples, he said that a three-D policy was implemented during his era to support the affectees of Swat operation and for the first time in world history all the displaced persons were sent back home within 90 days. He said that following violation of peace agreements by the terrorists, his government held joint session of the parliament and took nation into confidence before operation.

Earlier, commemorating the services of his father Syed Alamdar Hussain Gilani, he said that the educational, political and social services of his father would be remembered forever. Besides former prime minister Raja Parvez Ashraf, the leaders of PPP and other parties including Makhdoom Javed Hashmi also joined the death anniversary.
