RAWALPINDI - Sadiqabad police rounded up more than 60 poor scavengers during a search operation launched in various areas, later all of them were released on the intervention of lawmakers.

Most of the scavengers belonged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and supporters of PTI Chief Imran Khan, who bagged a comprehensive victory from NA-56 in the general elections. They were locked up in police station without any reason.

In the daily crime register, it was mentioned that all the detainees were illegal immigrants and are Afghanis and staying in Sadiaqaba areas, a source revealed to this scribe Thursday. Later, police released all of them after the intervention of some MPs of PML-N and PTI.

Following the directives of City Police Officer (CPO) Humayun Bashir Tarar to take action against gangsters, but Sadiqabad SHO Sattar Khan nabbed more than 60 poor scavengers and put them behind the bars, the source said.

"Although detainees provided police all the documents including CNICs to prove that they were locals and not Afghanis but SHO and his team did not listen to them," source said. Parents of detainees contacted some PTI MPs for their release. Later, police released them after receiving calls from PTI MPs.

PML-N MPA Raja Hanif Advocate confirmed that Sadiqabad police held more than 60 Pakhtuns on suspicion of being Afghanis but he (MPA) asked the SHO to release them. On a query, Raja Hanif denied that nobody was being politically victimised at the hands of police and said: "Many of them are not supporters and voters."

The cell phone of PTI MPA Ijaz Khan Jazzi was switched off. CPO Humayun Bashir Tarar could not be approached for his point of view.
