Citizens protest against loadshedding

KARACHI- Hours long power outage has compelled the residents of Defense Housing Society (DHA) to stage protest and react violently after two grid stations in Landhi and Korangi tripped off on Tuesday. The residents of Khadda Marke, Khyaban-e-Shamsher and DHA staged protest demonstration against the suspension of electricity. They blocked the local roads by burning tyres and old furniture for hours. The protesters were chanting slogans against the KESC management and demanded immediate restoration of electricity. The DHA security officials along with police reached the spot and after negotiations, the protestors dispersed peacefully on the assurance of the restoration of power supply in the area. The residents of DHA were suffering from more than 12-hour long loadshedding since last many days, which irked the citizens and compelled them to resort to violent actions. Prolonged loadshedding has also caused acute shortage of water in the area. The sources in KESC told that some underground cable fault was behind the power outage in DHA. Meanwhile, the two grid stations at Landhi and Korangi tripped off plunging both towns into darkness. Electricity couldn't be restored till the filing of this report. The transmission line providing electricity to Nazimabad, North Karachi, Lyari, Liaqautabad, Nazimabad, Gulburg and other places tripped off suddenly in the evening causing massive power outage in the area. The gap between supply and demand in the city has widened due to cut off of supply from two units of Bin Qasim Plant, KANNUP and DHA power plant resulting in loss of more than 600MW. The announcement of the government to shutdown markets early has also failed to rectify the problem.
