According to the recent economic survey, approximately 50 million people are living below the poverty line. In such intricate circumstances, the responsibility is imposed on the government to take strenuous measurers for the betterment of its people in order to provide basic necessities of life. Punjab is a biggest province of the country in proportion to its population so it is quite obvious that majority of the poor people of the country might be living in this province. In the present scenario, the Punjab government under the leadership CM Punjab, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, has taken some concrete measures to eliminate poverty. The Punjab government has started many schemes for the welfare of the people living below the poverty line. Particulars of beneficiaries are properly verified and the exclusion of non-deserving beneficiaries makes this scheme transparent and independent from any sort of political barriers. The hallmark of this scheme is that more than 1.6 million of beneficiaries are declared eligible out of 2.2m of beneficiaries and approximately 0.6m applications have been rejected after scrutinised and refined process. As a matter of pragmatic fact that Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated the scheme on 14th of August 2008 and within short span of time 9th instalment for money orders has been distributed amongst beneficiaries by expending an amount of more than Rs 9 billion. Having an independent updated website, the elected members of Punjab assembly can access and view the data. According to the vision of the Chief Minister of Punjab, data of this scheme would be used for the skill training programme of unemployed male and female so that they could play an effective role in the society. Through different period of courses they will be imparted multifaceted training which entails electrician, plumber, textile printing, dress making, mobile repair, computer operator, medical assistant, motor bike mechanic. tractor mechanic, etc to enable them to earn their livelihood. Besides side, the initiative of the Punjab government by which Sasti Roti is being provided to people at cheap prices in order to give them a sigh of relief is also a flagship project of Mian Shahbaz Sharif which has been appreciated across the country. New tandoors have been established to provide sasti roti at Rs 2 to people wile government is spending approximately Rs 8 billion per year on this project. Such numerous programmes, schemes and mega projects commenced by the Punjab government are now being replicated in various parts of the country particularly in Punjab which reflect the outstanding achievements of Punjab government which will not only improve the conditions of people but would help to alleviate poverty across the country.
