The Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) scholarship programme will also be spread to other provinces to provide opportunity of quality education to underprivileged talented students across the country, said PEEF Planning Coordination Manager Ayesha Touseef.She was addressing a scholarship distribution ceremony at GC University, Faisalabad (GCUF) here on Monday. On the occasion, the PEEF awarded 88 postgraduate scholarships worth Rs4.5 million to talented deserving GCUF students. Speaking to the audience, Ayesha said that the PEEF was aimed at providing the blessing of education to talented and underprivileged students to bring them at par with the fortunate ones.She told the gathering that the PEEF, since its inception in 2008, had distributed 41,348 scholarships worth Rs2,091 billion under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. She said that in the academic year 2012, 9,751 scholarships had been distributed and 128 seminars had also been arranged to educate the students about the financial aid programme.Speaking on the occasion, Dean Faculty of Science and Technology Dr Naureen Aziz said that PEEF was a hallmark step that provided quality education to the less-privileged students. She said that Pakistan was blessed with the talented people and country could make progress leaps and bounds by educating them. She lauded the steps being taken on the part of PEEF for the promoting of education.Registrar Muhammad Ayub said that with the interventions of GCUF administration under the leadership of VC Dr Zakir Hussain, the GCUF had become sixth best university of the county, according to Higher Education Commission’s ranking. He hoped that the GCUF position will further go up because of enhanced quality education and research work. SFAO Assistant Registrar Saima Perveen presented the progress report of financial aid office before the gathering. Dean Faculty of Science and Technology Prof Dr Naureen Aziz Qureshi, Registrar Muhammad Ayub and PEEF Planning Coordination Manager Ayesha Touseef disbursed the scholarships among the students.Treasure Ghulam Nabi, Anjum Shrazi from PEEF, Home Economics Department Chairperson Dr Nighat Bhatti, and others were also present on the occasion.DSJ visits prison; inspects facilities: Pakpattan District and Session Judge Abid Hussain Qureshi along with Tehsil Bar Association president Abrar Sheikh and General Secretary Ahsan Dogar visited central jail Sahiwal where he was presented guard of honour by the Jail Police. On the occasion, the DSJ ordered release of some prisoners involved in petty crimes. He visited kitchen of the jail and inspected standard of the food being provided to the prisoners. They also went to the jail hospital enquired about the problems and healthcare facilities from the patients. They also went to the women and juvenile barracks and lent a kind hearing to their complaints. Meanwhile, DSJ Abid Qureshi directed early disposal of cases of women and juvenile prisoners. Jail Superintendent Gulzar Butt and Pakpattan District Bar Association President Dr Naveed were also present on the occasion.
