There are reports to the effect that the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) is really making fast progress since the induction of its new Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Nawaz. This university was created in the first decade of 2lst century but remained more or less dormant in its first years. It is only during the tenure of present incumbent that it has started collaboration with such prestigious universities like the Cornell University of USA and the Glasgow University of UK to push forth its teaching and research programme on modern scientific lines. What is required is to allow sufficient time and space to the leadership of this university. Once it has started to pick steam. I would propose that a senior professional of the Livestock profession, who had helped create the UVAS in the first instance, should also be given a second tenure. This would ensure continuity of the rapid progress the university has made recently in the fields of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. These disciplines are of crucial importance for economy of the country wherein the Livestock sector contributes more than half the GDP of the entire agriculture sector. -DR M.
