The Society for Human Rights and Prisoners organised a day long training session for the Sindh police officers at the Police Training College, Saeedabad, Karachi. The session was aimed at sensitising police officers on the concepts of human rights, refugee rights, application of Foreigners Act and the mandate of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Unfortunately, there is no proper selection criterion for recruitment of the police in Pakistan.
A majority of low ranked police officers are completely illiterate and know nothing about human rights at all. This is the reason the news of manhandling prisoners and other people by the police are so common. Therefore, such trainings should be conducted as a routine.
