MIRUR (AJK) - At least 37 members of the British and European Parliament have called upon the Indian government to immediately hand over the mortal remains of Shaheed Muhammad Afzal Guru and shaheed Maqbool Bhat, presently buried in New Delhi’s infamous Tihar jal, to their families for formal burial after performance of due rites.

The demand was made in a press release issued by the UK-based All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Kashmir here the other day.

“Following JKLF-UK campaign for the return of mortal remains of Shaheed Maqbool Butt who was hanged by India and buried in Tihar jail under similar circumstances to the hanging of Afzal Guru Shaheed, the letter has been sent to the President of India Parnab Mukherjee by the chair of the ‘All Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, in UK, it said.

Following is the text of the letter sent to the Indian President Parnab Mukherjee by the UK-based All Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir:

“We the undersigned members of parliament would like to appeal to your office to order the mortal remains of Kashmiri leader, Maqbool Bhat, who was executed in Tihar jail, on 11th February, 1984 and buried on the jail premises, to be handed back to his family in Kashmir or to his children living in Pakistan.

We make this appeal on humanitarian grounds as Maqbool Bhat’s family members were not allowed to see him at the time of his execution and have waited long enough to receive his dead body for a decent burial in Kashmir”.
