Lawyers ask govt to comply with SC orders

RAWALPINDI - The District Bar Association (DBA) witnessed a ruckus on Thursday when a group of lawyers loyal with Zardari-Gilani duo wrestled with the lawyers who were chanting slogans against Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani for not showing respect to the verdict of Supreme Court of Pakistan in a contempt case.
The other reason of the brawl was passing a resolution in favour of Supreme Court of Pakistan, which has become the target of Zardari-Gilani duo anti-judiciary campaign.
Earlier, DBA convened a meeting of its General Body after Malik Taufeeq Asif, the key lawyer of judges restoration movement, presented a resolution pressing the PPP-led government to obey the orders of SCP in contempt case. Lahore High Court Bar Association Rawalpindi (LHCBA) President Sheikh Ahsan-ud- Din, DBA President Sajid Ilyas Bhatti and many other office-bearers attended the meeting.
According to details, the situation got tense when a group of lawyers led by Shahid Mughal Advocate, a loyal of PPP, tried to gag some lawyers from chanting slogans and presenting a resolution against PM Gilani. They lawyers pushed one another, however, none of them got injured during the cockfight.
Later, PPP supporters left the Hall on intervention of some senior lawyers pitching full-throated slogans in favour of President Zardari and PM Gilani.
After sometime, DBA passed a resolution unanimously urging the federal government to comply with the orders and directions of the SCP as it was necessary for rule of law in the country.
LHCBA President Sheikh Ahsan-ud-Din, speaking on the occasion, said the lawyers’ community has decided to put a ban on entry of Dr Babar Awan and Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan in High Court Bar premises for supporting and backing PM Gilani, who had been started an anti-judiciary campaign.
A massive protest demonstration was also staged by the lawyers at Katchehri Chowk triggering a gridlock on GT Road and its linking roads. The protestors were carrying placards and banners mentioning slogans in favor of CJP Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and other judges.
Addressing the protestors, DBA President Sajid Ilyas Bhatti said that the continuous defiance on the part of PM Gilani could harm the democratic setup in the country. The PPP-led government was following the footsteps of a former military dictator Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, who also did not comply with the orders of SCP, said Bhatti adding that the lawyers once again would launch a massive movement against PPP led government for the rule of law in the country.
APP adds: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has always respected the courts and presence of its leaders in apex court is an ample proof of it, People’s Lawyers Forum Punjab President Khurram Latif Khosa said on Thursday.
Talking to reporters Khosa said that PPP has great honour for verdicts of the courts as Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani himself appeared before the apex court. He said that the prime minister is following the vision and mission of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and
Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for the welfare of the people.  He gave credit to PPP which rendered sacrifices for the promotion of democracy and fought against dictatorship. He said that PPP will continue supporting  democracy and the conspiracies hatched against the PPP government will be foiled.
He said that PPP will complete its tenure and also win the next general election with majority.
