Malpractices in levy of duties in amnesty scheme

Chairman FBR Ansar Javed has taken serious notice of malpractice in levy of duties and taxes under amnesty scheme at NLC dry port, Thokhar Niaz Baig, Lahore. FBR chairman while talking to APP here Friday said that he would take to task all the inefficient officers and corrupt officials. Meanwhile, FBR sources told APP that it was brought to the notice of the Chairman that many Appraisers and Examiners of Collectorate of Appraisement had committed irregularities and malpractice during the regularisation of smuggled vehicles under amnesty scheme which caused heavy loss to the kitty.
Contrary to guidelines prescribed by the FBR in connection with amnesty, the officers levied different slabs of duties on the same model and same type of vehicles.
One of the entry file, No 28, shows that an appraiser levied duty of Rs 1,118,456 on 1997 model Land Cruiser and on the other hand, as per file No 32, he levied duty of only rupees 95,000 on same type of vehicle with the same model.
Another entry file, No 69, shows that the Appraiser charged Rs 312,675 duty on Toyota Corolla, Model 1994 of car and model.
A group of Customs Inspectors charged duties on various types of vehicles and containers according to their own criteria, while 15 other inspectors were sidelined, said official sources.
