LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that a comprehensive strategy will have to be evolved to overcome power shortage and short-term and long-term planning will have to be made for the permanent solution of this problem. He said that maximum electricity would have to be supplied to industrial sector for the development and national prosperity. He said that Punjab government was working on different power generation projects. Hydel power and generation of energy through coal reserves was essential to meet the future needs of the country, he added. He stated this while addressing a joint meeting of presidents of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry, industrialists, MD Pepco, Chief Executives Lesco, Fesco, Mepco, Jesco and MD Sui Northern Gas here on Monday. Problems due to shortage of power to industry and different remedial measures were considered in detail in the meeting. Provincial Secretary Commerce and Investment and Secretary Irrigation were also present on the occasion. Shahbaz Sharif said that a comprehensive planning would have to be evolved to check the wastage of power and maximum supply of electricity and gas to industrial sector. He said that all segments of society would have to realise their responsibility in this regard because if adequate power was not made available to industry it would not only aggravate economic crisis besides increasing unemployment. He said that it was due to power shortage that he had imposed ban on use of air conditioners not only in his own office but also all government offices across the province. He directed Secretary Commerce and Investment to arrange a joint meeting of industrialists and Wapda and Sui Gas authorities to formulate comprehensive recommendations to cope with gas and power shortage. He said that recommendations thus formulated should be strictly implemented. He said that had Basha Dam been constructed and measures had also been taken for generating energy through coal reserves, the situation would not have been so serious. He directed Secretary Commerce and Investment to consider installation of solar bulbs at all major roads so as to save electricity. He said that the joint meeting of industrialists, Wapda and Sui Gas authorities has been convened to review proposals for the solution of problems being faced by industrial sector due to electricity and power shortage as well as considering measures for overcoming this crisis. MD Pepco informed the meeting that due to increase in water resources, production of electricity has increased and load shedding is now minimal. In response to a demand of industrialists, he announced a further relief of two hour in load shedding for industries. He said that Wapda could again face power shortage in December and January and necessary measures are being taken to deal with the problem.
