6 arrested over smuggling medicines

PESHAWAR - City district Peshawar administration yesterday foiled a bid to smuggle medicines of Punjab government to Afghanistan and arrested six alleged smugglers.
According to details, drugs worth millions of rupees were being illegally smuggled through a truck while the drugs were bearing labels ‘Punjab Government Property’ ‘Not for Sale’.
The medicines also bear stamps of Lahore’s Mayo Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Services Hospital, US Aid and other government health facilities.
The seized drugs included at least 60 different kinds of medicines. The medicines were hidden in scrap.
The truck driver was also found in possession of receipts from Lahore facilities.
The driver said that he did not know that medicines were being illegally transported.
However, the security personnel arrested five passengers and the driver for interrogation.
Police sources said that smuggling of Punjab government medicines to Afghanistan indicates a gang involved from Lahore to Afghanistan and efforts will be made to unearth the criminals.
