Islamabad - Police baton charged participants of a Shiite procession in sector G-10 yesterday when they tried to come out of the designated place, police said.

They said police and Rangers were deployed at the Imambargah in sector G-10/3 to restrict movement of the participants of a Shiite gathering but they tried to break the cordon inviting the police and Rangers to use batons and push them inside the designated place.

Around 30 persons were arrested on the spot. The participants received minor injuries as the law-enforcers used force against them.

Sources in police said that a Shia-Sunni clash had taken place last year in the same vicinity and the law-enforcers were quite concerned about the situation this year which prompted them to cordon off the procession so that they could not move outside.

They told The Nation that the devotees had not taken any permission for the procession. Ramna police have registered a case against the trouble creators and further investigation is under way.
