Quetta - Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri and Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Mir Hasil Khan Bezenjo on Thursday visited Gadani ship-breaking yard and reviewed the underway rescue operation in oil tanker wreckage.

The chief minister was accompanied by provincial ministers, MPAs, MPA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sahibzada Sanaullah Khan, Balochistan Chief Secretary Saifullah Chatta and other high officials.

The oil tanker owner kicked off scratching work on ship without getting NOC, preemptive measures and cleansing oil tanker which caused tragic inferno, said the Deputy Commissioner Lasbela Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah Hashmi briefing CM Balochistan about the ongoing rescue operation in affected ship.

The Lasbela administration immediately commenced the rescue operation after the fire incident took place rescuing 58 burnt labourers from the ship rubble; however, 20 labourers were killed. He said the Pakistan Navy, Pak Army, KPT, Hubco Power, KMC, DG Khan, Health Dept Balochistan and Edhi Services swimmers took part in rescue activities.

The DC revealed to have nabbed both the ship-owner and shopkeepers.

In the briefing, it was unveiled that Ship breaking industry was established in 1968, and 3043 ships had been anchored at the breaking ship for scrape proclivity. The industry generated Rs17.353 million revenue to the national exchequer.

The deputy commissioner said the catastrophic incident at Gadani caused mainly by managements’ recklessness and heavy casualties incurred in the blaze were due to inadequate fundamental facilities and missing of technical staff.

He said fire will be extinguished at the ship ruins within next 24 hours.

Terming the Gadani incident an authoritative negligence, Chief Minister Zehri immediately suspended the Manager Environment BDA Gadani Tariq Baloch, Joint Director laboure dept gadani and deputy director environment dept and ordered the chief secretary to investigate the incident in details and report within one week as further action will be undertaken in the light of report.
