KARACHI- The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed chief selector Mohsin Khan as the interim coach for the series against Sri Lanka. The PCB has been looking for a full-time coach after Waqar Younis quit due to personal reasons soon after winning one-off test, three ODIs and two Twenty20s against Zimbabwe last month. Australian ex cricketer Dean Jones emerged as favourite to get the permanent post of Pakistan team coach, whereas Aaqib Javed will be his deputy, disclosed a reliable source to WAQT T.V. The Test series against Sri Lanka begins in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 18, followed by five one-day internationals and a Twenty20. Mohsin Hasan Khan will be coach for Pakistan against Sri Lanka series only. PCB is in the process of appointing a full time coach, PCB said. Former Test batsman Ijaz Ahmed was named as assistant coach. Mohsin will accompany the team in UAE for the series and will also supervise the teams training camp in Lahore from October 10. Khan, a charismatic opener who played 46 Tests and 75 one-day matches between 1977 and 1986, assumed charge as chief selector in 2010. He is the fourth coach since PCB chairman Ijaz Butt's tenure began in 2008. Butt sacked Australian coach Geoff Lawson and then replaced Intikhab Alam with Waqar in 2010. The decision was taken after the PCB committee, led by former coach and manager Intikhab Alam, sought more time to bring in a new coach as Waqar Younis replacement, who left the key post after the recently-concluded tour of Zimbabwe. The committee has shortlisted five names, but last week Alam refused to reveal the names. The source also confirmed the rumours that Ijaz Butt is unlikely to get an extension as PCB chairman while Ali Raza, ex-president National Bank, is strong contender for the coveted post. Finally it is decided by the authorities that it is time to say bye, bye to Ijaz Butt from chairmanship and National Banks ex-president Ali Raza is a strong candidate for next chairman PCB, the source revealed. Another source said that Ijaz himself has not taken much interest to continue as PCB chairman. Last month Ijaz Butt request to President Asif Ali Zardari in which he asks for six months extension and Presidents House spokesman Farhat Ullah Baber confirmed about this request. But Zardari was looking other side. Now Ijaz may not be chairman after 8th of October, when his three year contract expire, the source revealed. While chairman is going to remove this post, another big decision to appoint a head coach for Pakistan has been decided and Australian Dean Jones is likely to be appointed coach for long term basis with Aaqib Javed as bowling coach. Col Noshad will go with team as an interim team manager. Naveed will join the team as manager after the Tests and will stay on for the December tour of Bangladesh.
