ISLAMABAD – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for the first time on Wednesday approved a decrease of Rs0.5 per unit in electricity tariff for the month of August under its fuel adjustment criteria.
The slash in electricity prices should not be considered as a permanent one, since such an evaluation is done on the basis of the costs incurred on the overall power generation.  It may be mentioned here that the government receives an extra charge of over Rs2 under the fuel adjustment, after bills are paid by consumers. “When consumers pay their bills, they should not think that they had paid the dues because any additional cost on power generation would be collected under the fuel adjustment criteria after the calculations were made,” a NEPRA official told this scribe.
 He said that electricity through hydel resources decreased the costs on generation, but when fuel share was more, the costs shot up.
Nevertheless, the decrease of Rs0.5 per unit in electricity tariff for the month of August does not apply on consumers of the Karachi Electric Supply Company.
