LAHORE - Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada has said that sports complexes will be established in all the universities in order to promote and strengthen sports culture in the country.
“All sports bodies of the country must dedicate all efforts, resources, wisdom and commit themselves to demonstrate credibility and sustainability for making a healthy and top sporting nation,” the minister said this while addressing a seminar under the aegis of Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) at a local hotel on Saturday. Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) president Lt Gen (R) Syed Arif Hasan, POA secretary Khalid Mehmood, PSB DG Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, Syed Mehmood Abid, Shaukat Javed, Chaudhry Yaqoob, squash legend Jahangir Khan, ex-Olympian Naveed Alam and others were present on the occasion.
The minister said the sports leadership in the country was at daggers drawn when he assumed the charge as minister of IPC (Sports), adding that confusion and chaos prevailed in the sports sector. He said there was no effective activity of sport, rather sports was in great shambles and doldrums.
He said the IPC ministry came forward and took effective decisions to settle long pending matters, adding that today situation is different as IPC ministry, PSB, POA and majority of the federations are on the same page. “Sports are an important pillar of the national life and require full attention and support of all segments of society, urging the need to discard old ruts and conventional approach to bring sports to a respectable level. Unfortunately the majority of sports leadership is surrounded by many problems,” he added.
He said sports had the power to change and inspire the world besides the clout to unite people, adding that the sports and the sports bodies needed to rise to the occasion and change the world and societies through sports.
The minister said that Prime Minister Mian M Nawaz Sharif, being a sportsman and sports-lover himself, had a vision to promote country’s sports, adding that sport help to disseminate the values like integrity, sportsmanship and fair play inside and outside sports arenas.
He said that terrorism has caused great loss to the sports activity in the country but our valiant armed forces have controlled the situation and restored sports activity in all parts of the country today. The minister thanked the POA and its office-bearers on the occasion.
