LAHORE - Dr Javid Iqbal, the son of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, was laid to rest at a local graveyard yesterday.
The funeral of former chief justice of Lahore High Court was held in Gulberg. Justice (r) Javid died at 91. He was under treatment at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore.
Qurankhwani and dua will be held today at 4:30pm and 5:30pm respectively at 61-Main Boulevard.
Born in Sialkot, the veteran is survived by Justice (r) Nasira Iqbal and two sons, Waleed and Munib Iqbal.
Justice (r) Javid, who also served as chairman of Pakistan Movement Trust, was an authority on the religious, national and political philosophy of his father.
He did BA (Hons) with distinction from Government College Lahore in 1944 and won gold medal in MA English and MA Philosophy in 1948.
He did doctorate in Philosophy in 1954 from the University of Cambridge and Barrister-at-Law from Lincolns Inn, London in 1956.
He received honorary doctorates from Villanova University of US, and Selcuk University. Dr Javid Iqbal thrice represented Pakistan at the UN.
He served as Lahore High Court Bar Association vice president in 1965 and appointed as the judge of Lahore High Court in 1971.
In 1982, he became the chief justice of the high court. In 1986, he was elevated as a Supreme Court judge. Moreover, he also served as a senator.
He authored various books on Pakistan’s nationalism, movement and political ideology of Pakistan. Some of them are ‘Nazaria-e-Pakistan,’ ‘Quaid-e-Azam Ka Virsa’, ‘Afqar-e-Iqbal’, ‘Islam Mein Riasat Ka Tasawwar’ and ‘Apna Gariban Chaak’. In recognition of his services, he was also awarded Halal-e-Imtiaz.
Tributes poured in for the veteran. In his condolence message, President Mamnoon said that his services in dispensing justice would always be remembered while his contributions to philosophy and education were unmatchable, he added.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Justice (r) Javid rendered great legal and literary service for the country.
“We have lost an intellectual, great jurist and a true Pakistani,” the prime minister said in his condolence message. He termed the death a ‘huge loss’.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan condoled the death on Twitter.
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has also expressed his condolences on the death of Javid Iqbal and said his services for the cause of justice and literature would long be remembered.
