LAHORE - PIA management and Senior Staff Association (SSA) have locked horns over the holding of association’s elections which are going to be held on October 14, documents available with The Nation revealed.

Sindh High Court had issued orders to PIA management last month to hold elections of SSA within 45 days and current SSA management announced October 14 as the date of polling. But, General Manager Industrial Relations PIA wrote a letter to current President SSA Safdar Anjum and asked him to postpone association elections on following grounds.

The letter speaks, “Dear Safdar Sahib, as you know that Essential Services Act has been imposed in PIA for a limited time period of six months. This has resulted in some administrative precaution. It is requested the election of PIASSA may be postponed till the time that essential services Act is lifted by federal government”. “Additionally, Hajj Operation 2016 is in progress and Ashoorra is also coming in next few days. So keeping in view the above said situation, you are requested to postpone the election, the letter further said.

In response to GM IR SSA president Saffdar said in a letter, “It is for your kind information that PIASSA election 2016 is being held on the orders of Sindh High Court therefore we have no authority to postpone or delay the said election”.

Meanwhile, at Lahore station, PIA officers’ two groups have announced candidates for the elections, including Grand Officers Alliance and Progressive Panel. Grand Officers Alliance, backed by current SSA, has announced the names of its candidates including president, Rana Mudasir, secretary general, Kashif Peerzada, senior vice president, Nou Bahar, organising secretary, Sohail Zahir, vice president, Zafar Shah, joint secretary Arshad Ashrafi and finance secretary, Kamran Asif. On the other hand, Progressive Panel has also announced its candidates including Sabir Hussain, president, and Athar Awan, secretary general, and others include Nadeem Durrani, Muqadas Butt, Rana Hammad Akhtar, Ahmed Gillani and Rouf Minhas respectively.
