Another park no more

Land grabbers turned out to be mightier than the Punjab government when they reoccupied the historic Chinar Park in Satellite Town only two days after the local administration demolished encroachments in the park. Local police fully helped the mafia. The reoccupation of the 50-years old park is a deadly blow to the much-trumpeted slogan of 'good governance' in Punjab. The latest position is that the mafia has laid out indications of plots in the park and are inviting investors to buy the plots. Over 50 'suspicious-looking' men are guarding the park against any possible move of intervention by the authorities concerned. It is obvious to the citizens that these land grabbers are influential people and can do what they want, even challenge writ of the state. This means they can even afford to confront the Chief Minister. This is a totally administrative matter, Local administration has admitted in writing to the authorities that a person named X illegally occupied a public park. Why can't the Punjab government move in to save public property? -ATHAR MASSOOD WANI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, August 27.
