Hike in petroleum prices puts people in trouble

ISLAMABAD - The unjustified rise in the prices of petroleum products have not only increased the problems of general public but also of those people associated with the transport industry. The Government says it was 'compelled to raise the petroleum prices due to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) Ordinance 2002 and agreements signed with gas utilities. It has also said Rs 35 billion-gas subsidy for gas users would remain implemented. However, the Government seems to play a dormant role and has literally done nothing to alleviate the hardships of the people. Talking to TheNation, Muhammad Adnan, a taxi driver said that his whole earning was spent in filling gas in his cabs tank so it had become difficult for him to fulfil needs of his family, he ad-ded. Muhammad Sidique, a passenger said due to the increase in the prices of CNG gas and oil, the fares had also increased to the dismay of a common man traveling by means of public transport. After the 18 percent increase in the price of natural gas, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has notified an increase in the price of the compressed natural gas (CNG) effective from August. According to the notification, the maximum price at CNG stations for consumers of Rawalpindi and Gujr Khan has been increased from Rs 55.73 per kg to Rs 58.30 per kg for the month of August.
