ISLAMABAD The National Assembly on Friday unanimously adopted two resolutions expressing the commitment to render concerted efforts for strengthening the democracy and democratic institutions and abolish feudal system from the country. The resolutions were moved by Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan after hectic brainstorming within the House among PPP, PML-N, MQM and PML-Q. This House affirms commitment to strengthening genuine democratic system and democratic institutions which alone can ensure national integrity and solidarity, provincial harmony, economic development, and well being and prosperity of the people of Pakistan, the resolution says. History has established that deviation from the democratic constitutional path has been disastrous for the country invariably leading to political instability differences between the Federation and the provinces, disruption of rule of law, lack of confidence in judicial system. Any attempt to adopt extra-constitutional or non-democratic measures amounts to endangering the future of Pakistan. The will of the people of Pakistan can be exercised to achieve their desired objectives through fair, free and transparent elections, says the resolution. The House reiterated the determination to uphold the supremacy of the Constitution guaranteeing fundamental rights of the people and rule of law in accordance with the oath made by the members. This house shall preserve, protect and defend the Constitution which embodies the principles of democracy, freedom and political, economic and social justice, good governance including establishment, assistance and procedure assuring transparency and accountability in decision-making requires strict adherence to this principle by all executive authority and public functionaries, it added. This House also reaffirms the commitment to an independent judiciary under the Constitution which too is a guardian of the constitution and rule of law and for free and responsible media which plays a vital role in ensuring public awareness, transparency and across the board accountability, according to the resolution. The House also opined that due to disastrous flood in the country, it was call of the time that all political forces, civil society, media and other segments of society should unite to surmount this natural disaster. The second resolution, which was passed unanimously by the House, said that the feudal system should be abolished from the country. It further demanded of the Government to take constitutional action against corrupt judges, generals, politicians and feudal lords. PPP MNA Nawab Yousaf Talpur opposed the second resolution regarding feudal system but he was not given floor by the deputy speaker Faisal Karim Kundi who adjourned the session immediately after the passage of second resolution.
